Have you ever felt like the world was simply too much to manage? Like your heart, your mind, and your very breath were buried beneath a relentless tide of tasks, emotions, and expectations?
That feeling—that heavy, chaotic storm within—is what Dr. Bradley Nelson defines in The Emotion Code as the trapped emotion of Overwhelm.
What is Overwhelm?
Overwhelm occurs when we perceive that the demands placed on us—emotionally, mentally, or physically—exceed our resources or capacity to cope. While occasional stress is a normal part of life, overwhelm signals something more: the energy of past experiences becoming lodged in the body.
According to The Emotion Code, when intense emotions aren’t fully processed in the moment, they can become “trapped” in our energy field. These trapped emotions can interfere with our emotional clarity, impact our physical health, and influence how we react to future situations.
Overwhelm may stem from:
- Being overloaded with responsibility
- Facing a sudden crisis or life change
- Long-term pressure without relief
- Feeling unsupported or unable to express emotions safely
Once trapped, overwhelm can show up as:
- Mental fog or forgetfulness
- Fatigue or shutdown
- Anxiety or irritability
- Physical tightness in the chest, neck, or shoulders
- Difficulty making decisions or staying focused
You Are Not Broken—You Are Burdened
It’s important to remember: if you’re feeling overwhelmed, it doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means your system is signaling that it’s time to pause, recalibrate, and release what no longer serves you.
Using The Emotion Code, we can uncover the original source of this trapped energy and invite it to release. Through gentle muscle testing and energetic intention, we bring compassion to the root cause and offer the body a chance to return to its natural state of peace.
A Story of Relief
One client shared with me how she’d spent years feeling like she was “drowning in invisible tasks.” Every morning she woke up already exhausted. Despite managing a family, a job, and a home, she felt constantly behind and blamed herself for not being more “together.”
During our Emotion Code session, we discovered that a trapped emotion of overwhelm originated during her teenage years, when she had taken on adult responsibilities far too early. With compassion, we released that stored energy—and for the first time in decades, she described feeling “light, spacious, and hopeful.”
“It was like someone opened a window in my soul,” she said. “I could finally breathe.”
Reclaiming Your Calm
If you’ve been feeling buried beneath life, know this: your overwhelm can be released.
Here are a few supportive steps you can take today:
- Pause and Breathe: A single mindful breath can begin to soften the storm.
- Ground Yourself: Stand barefoot on the earth, touch a tree, or visualize roots growing from your feet into the ground.
- Listen to Your Body: Ask where the overwhelm is held—and bring loving awareness to that space.
- Consider an Emotion Code session: Working with a certified practitioner can bring clarity and healing in gentle, profound ways.
You Are Meant to Feel Light
Overwhelm is not your true nature. Beneath the noise, your spirit longs for calm, clarity, and peace—and it is absolutely possible to return to that place.
