Have you ever noticed yourself becoming guarded in the face of criticism, conflict, or emotional vulnerability? Maybe you’ve found it hard to receive support, connect deeply with others, or express your truth without feeling like you need to shield yourself. If so, you’re not alone—and there is a path to relief.
Understanding the Emotion of Defensiveness
Defensiveness is a natural emotional response that often forms after hurt, betrayal, or judgment. It acts like armor around the heart—a well-meaning protector that says, “Never again.” While this response may have once served us, it can linger long after the threat is gone, showing up in our relationships, our work, and even in our relationship with ourselves.
When left unprocessed, this emotional energy can become trapped in the body, creating tension, irritability, and distance in our connections. You might find yourself quick to react, hesitant to trust, or chronically on guard.
What Is a Trapped Emotion?
According to The Emotion Code by Dr. Bradley Nelson, trapped emotions are unresolved energies from past emotional experiences that become lodged in the body. These invisible imprints can impact not only our mood and mindset, but also our physical well-being.
Dr. Nelson writes that each trapped emotion vibrates at a specific frequency and can distort the energy field of the body, often leading to pain, dysfunction, and emotional imbalance. Defensiveness is one such emotion—often linked to fear, shame, rejection, or humiliation.
But here’s the beautiful truth: You have the power to release it.

This practice is more than just relaxation—it’s an energetic shift. As you release this stored emotion, you make space for clarity, confidence, and connection.
Why Daily Emotional Healing Matters
Just as we tend to our physical bodies each day, our emotional energy benefits from regular care and attention. When we intentionally release what no longer serves us—through breath, movement, meditation, or energy healing—we rewire our nervous system and restore harmony within.
Practicing daily intention and grounding, paired with gratitude, allows us to stay clear and centered even in challenging moments.
